Flat land adjacent to river bend – usually on the inside bend, oftern prone to flooding. New housing estates built on the ‘haugh’ always raise eyebrows locally!
very much in everyday use . Most villages in rural Northumberland near rivers will have a field, house or farm referred to simply as ‘The Haugh’ (pronounced ‘Hoff’) [R.S.]
